Economic Development Planner

The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) seeks candidates for the position of “Economic Development Planner I” within the agency’s Land Use Department. In conjunction with other MAPC staff, this Planner will work on a wide variety of projects with local communities with a particular focus on sustainable economic development. In addition to local and regional planning work, the Planner will assist in evaluating and improving state laws, regulations, policies, and programs to encourage smart growth, sustainable economic development, and regional collaboration. The Planner will work closely with state agencies, local officials, community groups, businesses, and institutions.

Duties include: Help cities and towns to develop plans, policies, zoning and programs to achieve sustainable economic development; collect, analyze, and interpret economic data; conduct market and feasibility analyses to understand potential for new retail, residential, and office uses within MAPC communities.

Qualifications include: BA with major in planning, public policy/management, economic development or a closely related field and at least 3 years of relevant job experience; or a Master’s degree in one of these fields plus at least 1 year of relevant professional experience; Knowledge and understanding of the real estate development process, ability to evaluate residential or commercial sites and projects, or experience with development and finance; familiarity with key economic development laws, regulations, and tools of state and local government.

The starting salary ranges from $50,000 to $60,000, depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full time exempt position.
