Electrician I – Fire Protection – Facilities

Incumbents of this position, test, repair, install and maintain various types of electrical and fire protection systems and equipment; troubleshoot electrical, fire protection, and related equipment; maintain adequate inventory of equipment and materials; collaborate with outside contractors; and determine materials and equipment necessary for a job and on-the-job procedure changes. The basic purpose of this work is to ensure the safe and adequate functioning of electrical, fire protection, and life safety systems and equipment.

Is the University’s technician for the electronic and electrical components of fire alarms, fire suppression, fire sprinkler systems, emergency generators and HVAC systems. Tests and troubleshoots these, as well as interfaced components to identify problems and repair components incidental to troubleshooting.

Troubleshoots, maintains, repairs, and installs electrical and related equipment by using necessary tools, schematics, diagrams and outlines to identify and correct operational problems. Assists contractors and participates when work is performed with outside contractors to ensure compliance with Massachusetts state and NFPA safety codes and regulations.

Assists contractors, inspectors and participates when engaged to repair, inspect, or maintain, the fire alarms, fire protection systems, fire sprinkler systems and emergency generators. Assists Fire Department as required for testing, repairing, resetting, and responding to concerns. Also participates during the inspection, testing, maintenance, and repairs of those systems. To ensure compliance of all Massachusetts State and NFA safety codes and regulations. Assists Fire Department as required for testing, repairing, resetting, and responding to concerns.

Assists contractors, inspectors and participates with elevator inspections by testing interfaced fire protection and emergency communications equipment as required by Massachusetts Department of Public Safety as well as NFPA regulations.

Responds to emergency calls to evaluate conditions and make timely repairs to Fire Alarm, other various HVAC equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Electrical License
  • Knowledge of state and local electrical, fire protection, and life safety systems codes
  • Ability to understand, explain and apply the laws, rules and regulations governing assigned unit activities
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws, rules and regulations concerning electrical practice
  • The ability to work effectively with diverse groups
  • Knowledge of the principles and theory of electricity
  • Knowledge of the types and use of small hand tools used in electrical practices such as pliers, screwdrivers, etc.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of hand held power tools
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment including testing equipment used in electrical work
  • Knowledge of safety practices and precautions
  • Knowledge of inspection techniques used in electrical trade
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely
  • Ability to maintain accurate records
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships
  • Ability to perform calculations to determine voltage, amperage and resistance factors
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as electrical plans, schematics, drawings, etc.
  • Ability to make decisions and act quickly in emergency situations
  • Manual dexterity and aptitude.
  • Ability to climb and work from ladders and scaffolds, work in confined spaces
  • Ability to detect and locate causes of electrical failure or breakdown
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of testing fire alarm systems
  • Knowledge of the procedures and methods followed in the installation of fire alarm systems
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience installing, servicing, or inspecting fire alarm, life safety systems and electrical components of HVAC equipment
  • Possess a current and valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 years’ experience as a licensed Electrician
  • Demonstrated willingness to be on essential personnel list for facility related emergencies and University closings due to weather
  • Ability to operate air and hydraulic lifts
  • Similar institution experience
  • Knowledge of a variety of low voltage systems such as HVAC controls to operate air and hydraulic lifts
  • Similar institution experience
  • Knowledge of a variety of low voltage systems such as HVAC controls
  • Ability to operate Energy Management Systems

Possible Multiple Positions:

Second Shift

May include one weekend day in regular shift.
