Memorial at Downtown Crossing

Nezzie Taylor and Antonio Dewolf approached the makeshift memorial to former Mayor Thomas Menino at Downtown Crossing — a wreath of white roses on the pedestrian walkway between the Filenes building and Macy’s.

Boston is mourning the death of the city’s longest-serving mayor. Politicians, past and present city workers and residents of the city’s neighborhoods, where Menino spent much of his time, are commemorating the life of the self-described “urban mechanic.”

Taylor and Dewolf met Menino at the dedication of the Dudley Commons development in Roxbury back in 2008.

“I remember how happy he was when he came there,” Taylor recalled. “He spoke to everyone there. He cut the ribbon and we were all having a great time.”

Taylor approached the memorial and placed a dozen peach-colored roses among the other bouquets laid on the pavement in front of the memorial.

“He had such a wonderful personality,” she said. “We all just loved him.”
