Hosting its Green Light Gala on October 26, the Middlesex County Chapter of Links Inc., is placing a special focus on providing “real life skills” for the underserved, particularly women. The chapter, which was formed in 1976 as part of the national chapter, The Links, Inc., provides a wide range of services primarily to the African American community.

In 2011, the chapter formed a partnership with the Brookview House, a transitional program for homeless families in Dorchester, after observing that donations of goods wasn’t the complete answer to addressing the needs of the families. “We engaged in activities to address poverty and homelessness in our community but we wanted to take steps to empower families in these situations,” said Dani Monroe, president of the Middlesex County Links.

In addition to donations of furniture and goods, the chapter has launched a series of lifestyle classes on a wide range of topics including financial literacy and grooming tips to how to communicate in a job interview. The classes are held on evenings and on Saturdays at Brookview’s locations in Dorchester and in Roxbury.

The Links also encourage young women to work with chapter members in developing the programs that best fits their needs. “We are passionate in our efforts to epitomize the national goal of The Links, Incorporated which is “To lead with excellence and serve with grace,” said Monroe.

In addition to their work on the “Sister to Sister” initiative, the chapter also focuses on five areas of service as outlined by the national chapter: Services to Youth, The Arts, National Trends and Services, International Trends and Services, and Health and Human Services.

The Middlesex County Links will host the Green Light Gala on Sunday, October 26 at the Venezia Waterfront beginning at 6 p.m. The evening will feature light dining, entertainment and a live and silent auction. The Venezia Waterfront is located at 20 Ericsson Street at Neponset Circle in Boston.

The fundraiser will support the Brookview House, other community programs, and college scholarships awarded to local students. For tickets and more info on the Gala: www.middlesexcountylinksinc.org/mclinks/green-light-gala/.
