Meet Josiah Bote

Josiah majored in biology and took part in the honors program. He researched dry eye syndrome in a microbiology lab on campus and volunteered at nearby Lowell General Hospital. These and other experiences at UMass Lowell, including pre-med advising and support from the career counseling office, affirmed his ambition to be a doctor and helped him get into medical school. Because he knew he had years of medical school ahead of him, Josiah appreciated the fact that his undergraduate education was affordable without compromising on quality. Meet Krithika Manohar
“Think outside the box!” said Krithika, a transfer student majoring in math and computer science with a minor in studio art. “This principle guides artists and programmers alike.”
Krithika took summer calculus classes at UMass Lowell to fulfill requirements for her animation major at a Boston art college. She did extremely well and rediscovered her love of mathematics. With encouragement from her professor, she decided to transfer to UMass Lowell and she’s never looked back. Krithika has a computer science research position that combines all her interests. She is programming the user interface for a web-based application that translates data sets into meaningful graphs and illustrations.

UMass Lowell’s academic programs are offered through six colleges: the College of Engineering, the College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the College of Management, the College of Sciences, the School of Health and Environment and the Graduate School of Education. These cover the spectrum of learning from traditional programs like history, philosophy, biology, art and music, to unique interdisciplinary programs like sound-recording technology, global studies and robotics. UMass Lowell graduates are trusted by employers and graduate schools alike because they have been thoroughly prepared here. They’ve had opportunities to try out careers and develop and improve skills through relevant hands-on experiences on campus, in Lowell or Boston, or on the other side of the world. These include co-ops, internships, research, service-learning and clinical experiences. Many students take advantage of the Commonwealth Honors Program for high-achieving students as well as the many options for earning both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in as few as five years.
Meet Pascale Jean Jacques
“Finding the connection between what I love to learn and what I love to do helped me become a leader.”
As a freshman, Pascale was reserved. But with encouragement from other students she began attending events and eventually became an officer in a student organization. Meanwhile, classes for her community health major awakened an interest in minority women’s health issues. Now, Pascale combines her academic and extracurricular interests while running the organization SISTERS (Sisters of Integrity Striving Toward Empowerment, Respect and Success), which plans events to raise funds and awareness for the kinds of issues Pascale cares about most. Through working to empower others, she empowered herself.

Everything you need to find and fuel your life’s focus is here, including more than 120 student clubs and organizations, 17 varsity sports, dozens of recreational teams and activities and an inclusive community. The advantages to living on campus are many and so are the options, from traditional residence halls to apartments to a former hotel in downtown Lowell. The University has added hundreds of beds in recent years with major additions and upgrades still underway.
Lowell, like the University, is warm and welcoming. It’s the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. It’s the hometown of Beat poet Jack Kerouac and boasts one of the nation’s largest urban national parks. It’s a cultural hub where ethnic communities share their languages, art and cuisines.
