BNN honors Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department was recently the recipient of one of five Boston Neighborhood Network “BNN Honors.”

Chosen for recognition by the Boston cable network, the Common Ground program is one of the Department’s many community outreach and information initiatives.

Introduced by Sheriff Andrea Cabral in June of 2006, the Common Ground program delivers the Department’s message of public safety and crime prevention, and keeps viewers abreast of activities occurring in the Department and within the communities of Suffolk County.

Each week Department managers, members of social and civic organizations and employees from city, state and federal agencies are interviewed for the show. Now expanded to a full hour, the show can be seen in not only Boston, but also in Chelsea, Winthrop and Revere.

The program, co-hosted by Sheriff Cabral and the Department’s Chief of External Affairs and Communications, Steve Tompkins, has aired more than 150 episodes featuring a variety of community organizations and representatives, elected officials and Department employees.

The awards were presented by veteran journalist and reporter Sara-Ann Shaw during the network’s annual meeting, which took place at BNN’s Charles J. Beard II Media Center in Egleston Square.

Receiving the award on behalf of the Department as the producer of the Common Ground program, Deputy Director of Communications and External Affairs Ed Geary  Jr. expressed his appreciation to the assembly.

Bunker Hill Community College Magazine Wins Awards

Bunker Hill Community College received two top awards from District One of the National Council for Marketing and Publications (NCMPR) at the organization’s recent conference in Baltimore.

NCMPR sets the standards for professionals working in the areas of communications, marketing, fundraising and alumni relations at two-year colleges nationwide.

BHCC Magazine earned a Gold Award for overall excellence in a stiff competition in which the judges also gave out two silver and two bronze prizes.  The magazine also took the top prize — another Gold Award — in the Original Photography category for an imaginative photo celebrating a culinary arts  professor’s award-winning thesis on food in the works of Shakespeare.

“Bunker Hill Community College is fortunate to have a highly creative team of writers, photographers and designers who fully understand the challenges of higher education and who consistently find exciting ways to tell the world about our amazing college,” said Patricia Brady, editor of the magazine.

BHCC Magazine was launched five years ago and has garnered national and regional awards from NCMPR, as well as from organizations such as the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and the University and College Designers Association (UCDA), in which it competes with four-year institutions.
