John J. Linnehan was recently elected chairman of the board of directors of America SCORES New England, a nonprofit after-school program dedicated to helping Boston Public Schools students develop life skills, literacy and health through soccer and creative writing.

“As America SCORES New England moves into its second decade, it’s an honor to accept this role and lead a talented and dedicated Boston organization providing necessary skill-building tools to the children of Boston,” Linnehan said in a statement.

Linnehan first joined the America SCORES New England board as treasurer in 2007. He is the president and CEO of ChannelMining Solutions Inc., a Boston-based business that specializes in developing and launching new financial services companies. Prior to launching ChannelMining, Linnehan served as senior vice president of business development and finance at Pioneer Investments, a $36 billion local mutual fund firm.

“John’s commitment to America SCORES and his passion for helping the children of Boston is unparalleled,” said outgoing board chairman Robert Shay in a statement. “Under his leadership I am confident America SCORES will bring its rich curriculum of athletics and literacy to more of Boston’s at-risk urban youth than ever before.”

America SCORES was recently recognized by President Barack Obama for its commitment to youth. In a letter, the president reminded students to challenge themselves to make a difference in their communities and praised America SCORES for “playing an essential part in keeping kids engaged in constructive activities.”

“John brings extraordinary talent and dedication to America SCORES,” said Dennis Wright, executive director of America SCORES New England. “No one is better prepared to lead America SCORES New England through challenging economic times, and no one is more committed to the work of preparing a new generation of student athletes for success throughout their lives.”

Linnehan earned a bachelor’s degree in finance and strategic management from Boston College and a master’s degree in business administration from Babson College. Originally from Allston and Newton, he now lives with his family in Hingham.
